Karachi’s city administration has nearly completed the cleaning and de-silting of 41 major storm drains ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, City Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab said on Saturday.

Wahab made the statement during a visit to Jubilee Nullah, Garden Nullah, Soldier Bazaar Nullah and Regal Saddar Nullah, where he reviewed ongoing work to improve the city’s stormwater drainage system.
He said cleaning work on the major drains was progressing rapidly and directed the District Municipal Corporations (DMCs) to ensure that drains within their respective areas were also cleaned.
“The DMCs should clean the drains passing through their area, trying not to cause any inconvenience to the citizens in the rainy season,” Wahab directed.
He stressed the need for coordination among all relevant departments to prevent urban flooding and ensure the timely disposal of rainwater during the monsoon.
“All action for stormwater drainage should be taken under a joint strategy, all districts must make water drainage possible in their respective areas,” he said.
Metropolitan Commissioner Afzal Zaidi, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board Project Director Zubair Channa, Deputy Commissioner South Abdul Sattar and other officials were also present during the inspection.
The administration’s preparations are aimed at improving drainage capacity and reducing the risk of rainwater accumulation in different parts of Karachi during the monsoon season.
