The Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in Karachi has taken precautionary measures to strengthen fire safety and emergency preparedness following the tragic fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad that claimed the lives of 14 newborn babies.

According to details, an 11-member Fire and Safety Committee has been formed at Jinnah Hospital on the directives of the hospital administration to ensure a swift response to emergencies.
The committee will remain operational around the clock and will be responsible for responding to fire incidents and other unforeseen emergencies within the hospital premises.
Jinnah Hospital Joint Executive Director Dr Salman said the formal notification establishing the committee would be issued on Thursday.

The committee will be headed by the hospital’s assistant director, while employees residing within the hospital premises have been given priority for inclusion.
The decision is aimed at ensuring that trained personnel are available immediately in case of a fire or other emergency, particularly outside regular working hours.
According to the administration, the committee will operate on a permanent basis and coordinate emergency response efforts across the hospital.
The precautionary measures were announced a day after a devastating fire broke out in the nursery of PIMS Hospital in Islamabad on August 26, resulting in the deaths of 14 newborn babies.

The incident has raised serious questions about fire safety arrangements and emergency preparedness at healthcare facilities.
The government has constituted a separate high-level committee to investigate the PIMS fire, determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and establish responsibility for any negligence.
The JPMC’s decision to establish a dedicated Fire and Safety Committee is intended to strengthen emergency preparedness and help prevent a similar tragedy at the Karachi hospital.
