Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Friday to attend the funeral ceremony of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as part of Pakistan’s official delegation.

Upon his arrival in the Iranian capital, Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir was received by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, along with senior Iranian military and civilian officials.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was also present at the airport to welcome Field Marshal Asim Munir upon his arrival in Tehran.

The visit is part of Pakistan’s official representation at the funeral proceedings, where senior Pakistani leaders are expected to convey condolences and express solidarity with the government and people of Iran following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Earlier to this, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departed from Islamabad on a one-day official visit to Iran to attend the funeral of the country’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The funeral is being held in Tehran and is expected to be attended by heads of state, senior officials, and dignitaries from across the world.

Accompanying the Prime Minister are National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Atta Tarar, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PPP Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari, and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

During the visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will convey condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Pakistan to the Iranian leadership. He is also expected to reaffirm Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran during this period of national mourning.

After completing his engagements in Tehran, the Prime Minister will travel to Istanbul for a separate bilateral visit to Türkiye.

Meanwhile, Iran is preparing an extensive series of funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with events taking place over several days. The funeral rites will begin in Tehran, followed by large public processions in Qom and Mashhad, as well as commemorative ceremonies in Iraq.

According to Iranian state media, Ayatollah Mohammad Saidi, the Friday prayer leader in Qom, described the expected public turnout as a demonstration of support for the Islamic Republic, saying the funeral procession would serve as “another referendum” on the country’s political system.

Iranian authorities have called for widespread public participation as the nation observes a week of mourning following the death of its supreme leader.
