According to SPARCO, the warming trend in the Pacific Ocean could influence weather patterns in Pakistan during the current monsoon season as well as the upcoming winter season.

The agency said El Niño may lead to changes in weather conditions across different regions of the world. It warned of a risk of drought in parts of Southeast Asia, Australia, India and Africa, while some areas of South America and East Africa could experience above-normal rainfall.

What is El Niño?

El Niño is a climate phenomenon associated with a rise in global temperatures and is triggered by above-normal sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean.

According to SPARCO, El Niño can cause drought conditions in some parts of the world while bringing heavy rainfall to others. During El Niño periods, rainfall in Pakistan and the surrounding region tends to decrease.

As Pakistan is an agricultural country, reduced rainfall could have implications for agricultural activities and related sectors.
