Higher Education Commission (HEC) has decided to reverify the academic credentials of 36,931 students enrolled at unauthorized campuses through an independent verification process.
The decision was taken during the 46th meeting of the commission chaired by Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, according to official details released after the session.

Under the new decision, an independent committee consisting of experts from outside the HEC will be established to review the records of students whose academic documents had earlier been declared complete.
Officials said the HEC would only provide secretariat and administrative support to the committee during the reverification process. However, some commission members reportedly recorded dissenting notes regarding the decision.
The commission also reviewed cases involving graduates whose degrees had previously been attested by the HEC but later faced suspension of verification status after authorities discovered that the students had studied at unauthorized campuses.

According to the commission, those cases will also be re-examined by the independent committee before any final action is taken regarding the status of the degrees.
In another major development, the HEC approved significant reforms in the degree attestation and equivalence process by replacing the traditional physical attestation system with a fully digital and evidence-based verification mechanism.
The commission further abolished the requirement of submitting prior or subsequent academic qualifications for degree attestation, a step expected to simplify procedures for applicants.

The move comes as the HEC continues efforts to strengthen transparency, improve academic verification standards, and address concerns related to unauthorized campuses and questionable academic credentials in Pakistan’s higher education sector.
