National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has warned that millions of mobile SIMs and other essential services in Pakistan could be affected due to expired or unverified Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) and unauthorized records.

According to NADRA officials, around 8.1 million SIMs are at risk of being blocked, while a large number of mobile connections are also registered against expired or incorrect identity documents.

In some cases, SIM cards are still active in the names of deceased individuals, creating serious concerns for identity verification and national security.

During a recent briefing, NADRA spokesperson Syed Shabahat Ali explained that Pakistan has issued approximately 215 million SIMs.

Out of these, more than 41 million SIMs are linked to expired identity records that have not been renewed by users. He added that over 223,000 SIMs have remained unrenewed for nearly a decade.

Expired CNICs can also impact banking systems, mobile wallets, government subsidies, vehicle registration, and property transactions.

Officials stressed that identity verification is essential for financial and security systems across the country.

NADRA also revealed that over 4.2 million identity cards linked to deceased individuals have been cancelled after verification through Union Councils and biometric checks.

However, some cases still remain unresolved, as proper family verification is required before complete cancellation.

To facilitate citizens, NADRA has activated 961 registration centers across Pakistan along with more than 4,000 e-franchise service points. Citizens can also check their CNIC status through official SMS services or visit nearby centers for renewal.

Officials urged citizens to update their identity records immediately to avoid disruption in mobile services, banking access, and government benefits. They also warned that delays could result in service suspension in the near future if compliance is not ensured.
