The United States has called on its allies to increase support in efforts to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route affected by tensions in the Middle East.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Western countries agree that Iran should not become a nuclear power, but emphasized that allied nations must play a stronger role in restoring global energy supply routes.

She also noted that United Kingdom should have acted more quickly regarding the Strait of Hormuz situation.

Leavitt added that Donald Trump’s planned visit to China has not been canceled but may face delays due to the ongoing crisis in the region.

Speaking to CNBC, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Iranian ships are already moving through the waterway and delivering oil to international markets.

He added that more vessels are expected to pass through the strait, including ships from India and China, which could gradually restore maritime traffic and stabilize supply.

Bessent also said President Trump had made it clear that Washington’s objective was to weaken Iran’s military capabilities, including its naval forces and ability to project power beyond its borders.

UK rules out joining war

Separately, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated that the UK would not participate in a war against Iran.

Speaking at a press conference at 10 Downing Street, Starmer announced a £53 million support package to help citizens affected by rising oil prices caused by the conflict.

He warned that energy prices have already increased due to tensions in the Middle East and could rise further. To support consumers, the UK government plans to freeze oil prices for three months, starting in three weeks.

Starmer also stressed that reopening the Strait of Hormuz would not be easy but said Britain is working with allies to restore maritime traffic through a practical international plan, adding that the mission would not be conducted under NATO.

About Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes, with a significant portion of global crude oil passing through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to international markets.

Any disruption in the strait can quickly impact global energy prices and supply chains.
