A growing terrorism threat in Karachi has prompted police and law enforcement agencies to move on high alert, according to Additional IG Karachi Azad Khan.
Speaking to media representatives and bureau chiefs at the Karachi Police Office, Azad Khan said the threat level remains high. However, he assured citizens that the police and other security agencies are fully vigilant and prepared to respond to any untoward incident.
He stated that Karachi remains one of the key targets for militant groups referred to as “Fitna-ul-Kharij” and “Fitna-ul-Hindistan.”

According to the Additional IG, hostile elements often fund local proxies to carry out attacks, mainly focusing on soft targets and sensitive areas within the city.
He added that while terrorists are currently more active in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, Karachi cannot be ignored due to its economic and strategic importance.
Azad Khan highlighted the role of the Safe City Project in improving surveillance and crime prevention. He said modern technology and human intelligence are being combined to strengthen security and make Karachi safer.

Surveillance cameras, digital monitoring, and coordinated intelligence-sharing are helping authorities track suspicious activity more effectively.
He also addressed progress on the long-awaited forensic laboratory facility. The Additional IG admitted that the project is facing several challenges and delays, but work is ongoing. Once completed, the lab is expected to improve criminal investigations and evidence collection in the city.
Emphasizing internal reforms, Azad Khan stressed the need to appoint qualified and professional officers.

He warned that political recommendations negatively affect governance and weaken institutional performance. He also expressed his intention to end the traditional “police station culture” and provide more public-friendly services.
Responding to questions, the Additional IG clarified that the primary duty of police is crime prevention, investigation, and public protection. Issues such as drugs, smuggling, encroachments, and begging fall under other departments.
He said focusing on core responsibilities would not only improve performance but also help reduce corruption within the force.
