The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation announced on Thursday that alternative spaces will be allotted to shops that are set to be demolished in the ongoing anti-encroachment drive.

“It has been decided as per policy that the government will manage the alternative spaces first before starting to demolish the markets,” Samaa Digital quoted KMC’s senior director anti-encroachment department Bashir Siddiqui as saying.

Siddiqui said that the step has been decided upon in light of a recent shift in the department’s policy after a shift in reigns and the KMC Estate department has been asked to look into the feasibility for alternative business spaces to be set up. However, he reiterated that all the markets built on storm drains will indeed be demolished.
