Karachi’s Covid-19 situation has worsened, with the city’s coronavirus positivity rate reaching 20 per cent, according to the latest statistics shared by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

The province reported 1,314 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, while 867 patients were hospitalised. Of those receiving treatment, 562 patients required high-flow oxygen, according to the chief minister’s figures.
The death toll also increased, with 25 more Covid-19 patients losing their lives, taking Sindh’s reported coronavirus death toll to 5,697.
District-wise Covid-19 Cases
District East reported the highest number of active cases with 356 infections.
The district-wise figures shared by the Sindh government showed:
- District Central: 287 cases
- District Korangi: 251 cases
- District South: 190 cases
- District Malir: 122 cases
- District West: 108 cases
These figures brought the reported total to 1,314 new cases.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah urged citizens to strictly follow the government’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) to help contain the spread of the virus. He warned that violations could lead to strict action.
Earlier, the Sindh government had decided to introduce additional restrictions in response to the worsening Covid-19 situation. The measures included the closure of primary schools and a proposed ban on indoor dining for two weeks, following recommendations from the health department.
Delta Variant Cases Detected in Karachi
The development came after the Sindh Health Department confirmed the detection of 35 cases of the coronavirus Delta variant in Karachi.
According to the department, the verified cases were identified in selected Covid-19-positive samples collected from June onwards. Officials said patients infected with the variant had experienced severe symptoms.
Given the highly contagious nature of the Delta variant, the health department advised citizens to limit unnecessary movement and follow coronavirus safety protocols.
The provincial government also urged the public to strictly observe preventive measures, including wearing masks, maintaining social distancing and avoiding crowded places, to reduce the spread of the virus.
