The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new captain of the national men’s ODI team, the board confirmed on Monday.
The 25-year-old left-arm pacer will lead Pakistan in the three-match ODI series against South Africa, scheduled from November 4 to 8 at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
The decision was finalised after a meeting in Islamabad attended by white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, Director High Performance Aqib Javed, and selection committee members.
Shaheen has represented the country in 66 ODIs and 92 T20Is, taking a combined 249 wickets.
In 32 Test matches, excluding the ongoing second Test against South Africa, he has bagged 120 wickets, solidifying his reputation as a world-class bowler.
The PCB stated that Shaheen’s leadership skills and consistency made him a natural choice for the ODI captaincy.
He has previously captained Pakistan in five T20Is against New Zealand in 2024, gaining valuable experience in leading at the international level.
