Sindh government has announced closure of all schools and colleges in Karachi on Thursday, August 21, due to heavy rain forecast.
Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah stated that the step was necessary to protect students, announcing that the schools, colleges, universities, and other Sindh government institutions to remain closed on Thursday.
Authorities had declared a public holiday as rainwater inundated roads, residential areas, and business districts. Urban flooding across Karachi left the city’s routine life paralyzed with traffic disruptions and severe inconvenience.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah conducted an emergency visit during the rainfall. He admitted that Karachi requires a major upgrade in its drainage system to tackle heavy rains and avoid disaster.

He said that if the city wants a 100-meter drainage system, then parts of Karachi must be dug up again. He emphasized modern infrastructure to withstand future climate challenges.
The chief minister also chaired an emergency meeting with city officials. He reviewed dewatering operations and directed teams to remain vigilant, as more heavy rainfall is forecast in coming days.
Murad Ali Shah acknowledged that Karachi was still recovering from flooding earlier in the week. He assured citizens that authorities are coordinating efforts to restore mobility and provide relief.
Urban flooding once again highlighted Karachi’s fragile drainage system and poor planning. Experts warn that without urgent investment, the city will continue facing crises during heavy rains and monsoon seasons.
