The Government of Pakistan has announced civil awards for nine leading sports personalities, including former cricket captain Shahid Afridi, in recognition of their outstanding contributions. The announcement was made as part of the country’s 78th Independence Day celebrations.
Among the recipients, Afridi will be conferred the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, honoring his long-standing services to cricket. Afridi represented Pakistan in 524 international matches and was part of the 2009 T20 World Cup-winning squad.
Renowned mountaineer Shehroze Kashif, who became the youngest Pakistani to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters, and late equestrian Malik Muhammad Atta have also been nominated for the Hilal-e-Imtiaz.
In women’s cricket, Sana Mir, former Pakistan captain and the country’s first cricketer to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, will be awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz. She is recognized for her trailblazing role in inspiring generations of women cricketers.
Pakistan’s most decorated para-athlete, Haider Ali, who secured four Paralympic medals including a bronze in discus throw at Paris 2024, has also been named for the Sitara-e-Imtiaz.
The President’s Award for Pride of Performance (PAPP) will go to Mixed Martial Artist Shahzaib Rind and Kabaddi player Muhammad Sajjad for their achievements on the international stage.
Additionally, squash player Hamza Khan, shooter Mohsin Nawaz, and tennis player Rashid Malik have been nominated for the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz.
The awards will officially be conferred on Pakistan Day, March 23, 2026.
This recognition reflects Pakistan’s commitment to honoring athletes who continue to bring pride and global recognition to the country.
