Tourists visiting the United Arab Emirates (UAE) can get a refund on Value Added Tax (VAT) paid on eligible purchases. The UAE introduced VAT at a 5pc rate in January 2018. Later that year, a fully digital tax-free shopping system was launched for tourists.
How the VAT refund system works
Planet operates the VAT refund system. The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has authorized it to manage the ‘Tax Refund for Tourists Scheme.’ Planet connects registered retailers with all UAE ports of entry and exit. This makes the refund process simple, fast, and fully electronic.
How to shop tax-free in the UAE
To shop tax-free, your purchase must be at least AED 250. At the store:
- Show a valid travel document (passport or GCC ID).
- The store staff will enter your data into Planet’s system.
- A tax-free tag is added to your receipt, and a digital form is created.
- Validate this transaction at the airport or exit point within 90 days.
Who is eligible for a VAT refund?
- Not every shopper qualifies. You must:
- Be an overseas tourist aged 18 or older.
- Not be a resident of an Implementing State.
- Not be a flight or ship crew member departing from the UAE.
Important Tip: Always ask if the store is registered with Planet. Non-registered retailers do not support tax refunds.
VAT refund amount
Tourists receive 87pc of the VAT paid. 4.80 Dirham (DH) is deducted per transaction as a service fee.
Validating purchases before leaving the UAE
Before check-in, visit a VAT validation point at the airport, seaport, or land border:
- Use a self-service kiosk or go to a manned counter.
- Scan your passport or enter ID details.
- Follow the kiosk instructions. A green light confirms validation. A red light means you need assistance from Planet staff.
- Choose your refund method: cash in AED, refund to your credit/debit card, or WeChat.
