US official promotes trade during Karachi business visit

Senior US State Department official Elizabeth Horst concluded a two-day visit to Karachi aimed at boosting trade, investment, and business opportunities between the United States and Pakistan.

Her meetings focused on strengthening economic cooperation and encouraging private-sector-led growth.

Horst met Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah at Chief Minister House, where they discussed ways to expand the US-Pakistan economic partnership.

The conversation emphasized fostering a favorable environment for commercial activities and encouraging collaboration in innovation and business.

She also met with members of the American Business Council and leading Pakistani entrepreneurs. The discussions centered on exploring joint ventures and new trade avenues, reinforcing the US commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economic development.

During a separate gathering, Horst engaged with Pakistani women innovators who are part of a US-funded South Asian mentorship program.

She praised their efforts in technology and entrepreneurship, highlighting the US government’s dedication to empowering women and driving economic inclusion.

Speaking at various events, Horst emphasized the shared potential of both countries. “The United States and Pakistan have a strong economic history. Together, we can open new doors for American businesses while advancing Pakistan’s economic progress,” she said.

Her visit reaffirmed Washington’s intent to deepen bilateral economic ties and support Pakistan in unlocking growth through innovation and trade. The US also views Pakistan as a vital partner in regional commercial strategies.

Elizabeth Horst recently completed her term as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Pakistan, serving from July 2022 to July 2025. She also held the role of Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs.
