The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has announced a new policy allowing married women to choose whether to display their father’s or husband’s name on their national identity card.
This major change comes under updated identity card rules implemented on the directions of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
A notification issued by NADRA says these reforms aim to improve security and reduce identity fraud. It also ensures decisions regarding seizure, cancellation, or restoration of identity cards are made within 30 days.
As part of the reforms, NADRA has upgraded the chipless ID card by including key smart card features. Data will now be available in both Urdu and English, and a QR code will be added for security – without any extra charges.
People who voluntarily report mistakes in their records will also receive legal protection. Regarding child registration, NADRA has made birth registration with the Union Council mandatory for issuing a B-Form.
- Children under 3: No biometrics or photos required
- Ages 3–10: Photo and optional iris scan
- Ages 10–18: Photo, biometrics, and iris scan mandatory
Each child will receive an individual B-Form with a validity period. While old B-Forms remain valid, a new B-Form will be required for passport applications.
The Family Registration Certificate (FRC) now has legal status. Applicants must submit an affidavit confirming the accuracy of their information. Citizens can correct or update family data via mobile app or NADRA offices. Meanwhile, men with multiple marriages will now have complete family details listed on the FRC.
