The upgradation project of the runway at Jinnah International Airport Karachi is progressing ahead of schedule, with 53 percent work completed by the end of May 2025.
Surpassing the targeted milestone of 51 percent, the Runway 07L/25R at Karachi airport is exceeded the progress of the given timeline.
Launched in July 2024, the project aims to modernize one of the busiest runways in the country and is expected to reach full completion by January 2026.
Authorities have accelerated development with double-shift operations to ensure the project stays on track.
A major breakthrough in the project’s timeline came with the arrival of the first batch of imported Airfield Lighting (AFL) equipment at the site.
These advanced lighting systems will enhance visibility and safety for aircraft during low-visibility conditions, night operations, and landings.
Additionally, engineers from the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) have recently completed specialized training abroad to ensure the effective deployment and maintenance of the AFL system.
With an estimated cost of Rs 8.3 billion, the runway upgradation project is considered a landmark step in modernizing Pakistan’s aviation infrastructure, aiming to elevate operational standards and improve safety at Karachi’s primary international gateway.
A spokesperson emphasized that the project continues to be a high priority and reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing airport capacity and efficiency across the country.
Earlier this year, Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) announced plans to complete the construction and upgrading of Karachi airport’s second runway on modern lines soon.
This project, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and safety, is a significant step for Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport.
Additionally, expansion projects are underway at Sukkur, Skardu, and Dera Ghazi Khan airports to accommodate large aircraft, with Sukkur and Skardu airports expected to be the first to handle them.
A new greenfield airport for Dera Ismail Khan is also in the planning stages, further improving the country’s aviation infrastructure.
These developments were discussed during the second e-court, chaired by Acting Director General (PAA) Air Vice Marshal Zeeshan Saeed, with Deputy DG Airports Sadiqur Rehman and other key officials in attendance.
The meeting focused on passenger issues and operational challenges, with PAA reaffirming its commitment to improving airport services and infrastructure.
