Heatwave to hit Sindh, other regions of Pakistan from May 15: PMD

Karachi weather

The Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave warning for several regions of Pakistan, including Sindh, with the intense weather expected to persist until May 20.

According to the department, temperatures may rise 4–6°C above normal in Sindh, South Punjab, and Balochistan from tomorrow May 15, while in Upper Punjab, KP, Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan, temperatures could spike by 5 – 7°C above the seasonal average.

The heatwave alert, issued on May 13, also cautions that the extreme temperatures may accelerate the melting of snow in upper mountainous areas, potentially impacting water flow patterns.

Although hot and dry conditions dominate most regions today, scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected in parts of Kohistan and Mansehra, providing minor relief from the heat.

The southern districts of Punjab could see temperatures soar to 42°C, while strong winds are likely in Islamabad.

Furthermore, a shift in weather is forecast for May 19 and 20, with rain and hail likely in Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and the federal capital, offering brief respite from the heatwave.

Authorities have urged citizens to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and take necessary heat protection measures, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly.
