Karachi roads becoming deadlier as motorcycle fatalities rise

Karachi’s traffic accidents have sharply increased, making motorcyclists the primary victims, with hundreds of fatalities and many more permanently disabled.

Over 4.2 million registered motorcycles currently fill Karachi’s streets, with 128,000 new registrations in 2024 alone, marking an overwhelming presence for 64 percent of the city’s transportation, raising urgent concerns about road safety and traffic law enforcement.

Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable, often suffering severe injuries, whether they collide with an object or are hit by other vehicles.

Common causes of these accidents include untrained riders, ignorance of traffic rules, speeding, lack of lane discipline, and the absence of side mirrors.

Dr. Irfan, a doctor at Jinnah Hospital, pointed out that a lack of traffic rule enforcement contributes to the rising accident rate.

“Wrong turns, bikes slipping due to poor infrastructure, overspeeding, underage riders, and the absence of side mirrors are all factors,” he said.

He noted a 15 percent to 20 percent increase in cases this year compared to last, along with more severe injuries.

In response, Karachi’s DIG Traffic Ahmed Nawaz stated that over 4,000 tickets had been issued in two weeks to motorcyclists lacking side-view mirrors.

He stressed the importance of safety measures: “Front and back lights must be functional, side mirrors should be installed and used, and helmets must be worn. Following these rules can significantly reduce accidents.”

Experts stated that nearly 97 percent of emergency room cases involve motorcycle accidents, highlighting the need for public awareness campaigns on traffic rules and safety measures.
