Pakistan to replace DRAP with new regulatory body

Pakistan DRAP new body

The federal health authorities are moving ahead with plans to establish a new regulatory body – Pakistan Food and Drug Authority (FDA) – to replace the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP).

As per media reports, the initiative, which aims to improve public health and boost exports, will replace the DRAP and align the country with global standards.

A second review meeting on the creation of the authority was held at DRAP, chaired by Dr Mukhtar Bharath, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Health. Senior officials, including DRAP CEO Asim Rauf, took part in the discussions.

During the meeting, Dr. Bharath stressed the urgent need for a central FDA to unify standards and address the fragmented regulations currently in place.

At present, food regulation is managed by provincial governments, each with its own standards, while pesticides are controlled by the Ministry of Food.

This separation has led to regulatory gaps, allowing harmful chemicals to enter the food chain and causing long-term health problems.

The proposed authority would consolidate the regulation of food, pesticides, and cosmetics, ensuring they meet global safety and quality standards.

Dr. Bharath explained that the Ministry of Health, working with Drap, the Ministry of Food, provincial governments, and other stakeholders, is finalizing recommendations for the new FDA.

Meanwhile, a formal concept note will be presented to the prime minister for approval soon.

A key objective of the Pakistan FDA is to support exports by ensuring that products meet strict international requirements.

Dr. Bharath pointed out that, “many countries require certification from a credible regulatory body, and the FDA will help boost Pakistan’s export potential.”

Additionally, the FDA will aim to improve the quality of local food, agricultural products, and consumer goods to match global benchmarks.

The health ministry has pledged to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the successful creation of the Pakistan FDA, which is expected to have a significant impact on public health and the country’s economic growth.
