UN report woman murdered International

One woman or girl is killed in every 10 minutes by relatives

A recent UN report reveals that every 10 minutes, a woman is murdered by a partner, boyfriend, or family member worldwide.

Released on the 25th International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the report highlights alarming global trends in violence against women.

The report, compiled by UN Women and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), shows a staggering 85,000 women were murdered in 2023, with over 60 percent (51,000) killed by their intimate partners or relatives.

This equates to an average of 140 women murdered daily, predominantly within their homes.

While women face the greatest threat from people they know, the report notes that men are four times more likely to be victims of homicide overall, comprising 80 percent of murder victims globally.

Africa leads in femicides by spouses or family members, with 21,700 women killed in 2023, followed by the Americas and Oceania. Europe and Asia report the lowest murder rates for women.

UN Women Executive Director Seema Bahos emphasized the need for robust measures, including:

  • Strong legislation to address gender-based violence.
  • Government accountability to ensure enforcement of protective laws.
  • Increased funding for organizations working on women’s rights and violence prevention.

This report underscores the critical need for global efforts to safeguard women and address systemic violence within homes and communities.
