Finland has implemented new income thresholds for residence permit applicants – effective from November 1, 2024 – ensuring they have the financial means to support themselves while living in the country.

The updated rules apply to various types of residence permits, with specific financial requirements based on permit type, region, and personal circumstances.

Work-Based Residence Permits

For work-based residence permits, the income thresholds have been raised:

  • General workers must earn at least €1,399 gross per month.
  • Specialists and EU Blue Card applicants need a minimum monthly gross salary of €3,638.

Regional Income Variations

To accommodate varying living costs across Finland, different income thresholds apply based on region:

  • Helsinki Metropolitan Area: €1,210 net per month or €14,520 annually.
  • Other large municipalities (e.g., Tampere, Turku, Oulu): €1,090 net per month or €12,360 annually.
  • Other municipalities: €1,030 net per month or €13,080 annually.

Student Residence Permits

International students must show a minimum of €800 per month in income, reflecting their subsidized housing and student discounts. The same amount applies to graduates looking for work, entrepreneurs, and researchers in the country.

Other Permit-Specific Income Requirements

  • Au pairs must have €340 pocket money per month.
  • Working holiday visa holders need €2,450 for the first three months to cover initial expenses.

Stricter Application Rules

Starting September 1, 2024, first-time residence permit applications must be submitted from outside Finland. Applications made within Finland will be rejected unless there are exceptional circumstances.

These updates are designed to streamline Finland’s residence permit process while ensuring that applicants can adequately support themselves during their stay.

Applicants should review the new income thresholds carefully to avoid rejection and ensure they meet the financial requirements for their specific permit type.
