Sindh govt launches crackdown on transporters overcharging on Eid ul-Adha

In a decisive move to alleviate the financial burden on citizens during Eid ul-Adha festivities, the Sindh government has initiated a rigorous campaign against transporters found guilty of charging exorbitant fares. Spearheaded by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, the crackdown is set to begin in Karachi starting tomorrow.

The Transport Department, under Memon’s directives, has issued clear instructions for swift action against any instances of overcharging by transporters during the Eid period. Letters have been dispatched to key law enforcement authorities including the Inspector General of Police, all Commissioners, Deputy Inspector Generals, and Deputy Commissioners to ensure effective implementation of the directives.

Speaking on the matter, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing relief to the public, stressing that those exploiting the festive occasion to impose undue financial strain on travelers will face stern repercussions.

Memon further emphasized that stringent measures will be taken against transporters and operators found guilty of hiking fares beyond the prescribed limits. The primary objective of the campaign, as outlined by Memon, is to safeguard the interests of the public and prevent any unjustifiable economic pressure on commuters during the festive season.

Echoing Memon’s sentiments, relevant Regional Transport Authorities (RTAs) and District Regional Authorities (DRAs) have been instructed to ensure the seamless provision of relief to the public. Any reports of overcharging are to be promptly addressed, with authorities urged to take immediate action against violators.

The crackdown comes as part of the Sindh government’s broader efforts to uphold consumer rights and promote fair practices within the transport sector. With Eid ul-Adha just around the corner, authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a hassle-free and equitable travel experience for all citizens across Karachi and beyond.
