Pakistan and India exchanged lists of prisoners held in each other’s custody under the 2008 Consular Access Agreement, the Foreign Office said.

The agreement requires both countries to exchange prisoners’ lists on January 1 and July 1 every year.
According to the Foreign Office, Pakistan handed over a list of 250 Indian prisoners to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. The list includes 52 civilian prisoners and 198 fishermen currently held in Pakistan.

At the same time, India shared a list of 439 Pakistani or believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners lodged in Indian jails. The list comprises 386 civilian prisoners and 53 fishermen, according to the Foreign Office.

Pakistan also urged India to release and repatriate 97 Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentences and whose nationality has already been confirmed. These include 64 civilian prisoners and 33 fishermen.

The Foreign Office further called on New Delhi to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all Pakistani and believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners awaiting their release and repatriation.
Islamabad also requested India to provide expeditious consular access to all believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners to facilitate the early confirmation of their nationality and speed up the repatriation process.

Under the 2008 Consular Access Agreement, Pakistan and India exchange lists of prisoners twice every year on January 1 and July 1. Separately, both countries also exchange lists of their nuclear installations and facilities on the first day of each calendar year under a separate bilateral arrangement.
The Foreign Office reiterated that the Government of Pakistan would continue its efforts to ensure the early return of all Pakistani prisoners from Indian custody through diplomatic channels.
