Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab visited the Hub Canal and stated that both the old and newly constructed canals are fully operational, rejecting reports claiming damage or collapse of the water supply system.

During his visit to the Hub canal, the Karachi mayor said water was flowing smoothly through both canals and insisted that the canal infrastructure remained functional.

“You can clearly see water flowing in both canals, but unfortunately misleading reports are sometimes circulated regarding the canal system,” he said.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab dismissed claims suggesting that parts of the Hub Canal network had become dysfunctional.

According to the mayor, restoration and activation work on both canals has been completed successfully to improve Karachi’s water supply system with both canals now Karachi have two cannals of 100 MGD each.

He added that city authorities are now preparing for the next phase of efforts to secure a larger water share for Karachi by approaching the Council of Common Interests, with the aim of increasing the city’s current 100 MGD allocation from the Hub Canal.

Karachi has long faced water shortages due to population growth, aging infrastructure, illegal hydrants, and supply limitations from existing water sources.

The Hub Canal system is considered one of the key supply channels supporting Karachi’s water distribution network alongside other major water projects serving the metropolitan city.

Water shortages remain one of Karachi’s most pressing civic issues, with residents in several areas frequently reporting low water pressure and irregular supply, particularly during summer months.
