Germany has opened significant employment opportunities for Pakistani nurses as its healthcare system faces a growing shortage of skilled staff, according to the Bureau of Emigration & Overseas Employment.
Officials say the demand is rising due to Germany’s ageing population and increasing life expectancy, which are putting pressure on hospitals and care facilities across the country.

Nursing professionals in Germany are employed under titles such as Pflegefachfrau, Pflegefachmann, and Pflegefachperson. These roles cover a wide range of services, including general nursing, pediatric care, and elderly care.
Roles and Work Areas
Opportunities are available in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, outpatient clinics, and palliative care units, where nurses are responsible for patient care, monitoring, and support.
Mandatory Qualification for foreign nurses
Pakistani nurses must go through a formal recognition process before they can work in Germany. Authorities assess foreign qualifications to ensure they meet national standards.
If there are gaps in qualifications, candidates are required to pass a knowledge test or complete an adaptation period to demonstrate equivalence with German training standards.
Language and eligibility requirements
Applicants must meet strict eligibility criteria, including German language proficiency at a minimum B2 level. They are also required to provide medical fitness certificates and proof of good character.
For those entering through certain pathways, a minimum A2-level German language requirement may be acceptable initially.
Multiple visa pathways available for applicants
Non-EU applicants must obtain a residence permit to work, as the EU Blue Card does not apply to nursing roles.
However, several alternative pathways are available:
- Visa for qualification recognition
- Recognition partnership (work while completing recognition process)
