Fishermen rescue rare Riso dolphin on Ormara coast

rare dolphin rescue

Fishermen in Ormara successfully rescued and released a rare Riso dolphin that was stranded on the coast, WWF Pakistan’s Technical Advisor Muhammad Moazzam Khan confirmed.

The dolphin, identified as a Riso dolphin, was found near the shore yesterday morning. Local fishermen immediately took action, ensuring its safe return to the sea.

According to Moazzam Khan, the Riso dolphin is one of 26 marine species found in Pakistani waters. It has a thick, rounded body and thrives in temperate and warm waters.

These dolphins can dive up to 1,000 feet and hold their breath for 30 minutes.

This marks only the third recorded sighting of a Riso dolphin in Pakistan. The species was first reported in the early 2000s, with a notable sighting on March 24, 2020, when a male Riso dolphin was found at Clifton Beach.

The successful rescue highlights the role of local fishermen in marine conservation efforts along Pakistan’s coastline.
