The three-day “Sindh Beach Games” officially started at Karachi’s seaside, with the opening ceremony taking place at the Nishan-e-Pakistan site on the beach.
The event was inaugurated by Sindh’s Minister for Sports, Sardar Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar, in the presence of several key officials, including Minister of Religious Affairs Riaz Hussain Shah Shirazi and Sindh Sports Secretary Abdul Aleem Lashari.
Over 500 athletes from all divisions of Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Sukkur, are taking part in competitions. The sports featured in the games include boxing, throwball, handball, volleyball, kabaddi, soccer, karate, badminton, and more.
In his address, Sardar Muhammad Bux Mahar highlighted that Sindh is set to host the National Games later this year, with major preparations already underway.
He assured that athletes from across the country would receive the necessary facilities, creating opportunities to make the nation proud.
He also revealed plans to organize National Beach Games following the National Games, and confirmed that Sindh Beach Games would become a permanent annual fixture in the province’s sports calendar.
Mahar, who first introduced the concept of Beach Games in 2017, expressed pride in the improved organization of this year’s event.
He also emphasized the importance of transparent player selection trials, ensuring equal opportunities for athletes from all districts and councils of Sindh.
Additionally, the minister discussed plans to support athletes by offering foreign tours to those excelling at the provincial level. He also mentioned the inclusion of Sindh’s cultural sports, such as Malakhra (Sindhi wrestling), and the idea of creating leagues for these traditional games.
Mahar urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to provide more opportunities for Sindh’s talented cricket players, stating that the province has immense potential in the sport.
The Sindh Beach Games will continue until Sunday, with medals and cash prizes to be awarded to the top-performing athletes and teams.
