The National Assembly Standing Committee on Law and Justice has rejected a proposed bill to allocate reserved seats for overseas Pakistanis.
The bill, presented by MP Noor Alam Khan, sought to grant reserved seats to individuals with overseas or dual citizenship.
The proposal faced opposition from committee members, including Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) Aliya Kamran, who expressed reservations about the inclusion of dual citizens.
Additionally, Noor Alam Khan’s bill aimed at limiting the contempt of court powers was also discussed. He noted the past misuse of such powers, particularly by former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar.
However, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar suggested reforming the existing law rather than abolishing it altogether.
Senior lawyer Latif Khosa added that the current contempt of court law, a remnant of a dictatorial regime, should be replaced with one enacted by an elected parliament.
Following the committee’s deliberations, Noor Alam Khan withdrew the proposed changes to the contempt of court law.
