The agency referred to Section 26A of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), which provides for penalties of up to three years in prison, a fine of up to Rs2 million, or both, for offences covered by the provision.
The warning highlights the importance of checking information before sharing it online, particularly when it concerns sensitive public matters or could cause unnecessary alarm.
NCCIA Advises Users to Verify Information
The agency has encouraged social media users to confirm whether information is authentic before forwarding messages, sharing posts or publishing claims online.
Users should check the original source of a report and look for confirmation from credible news organisations or relevant official authorities before sharing it with others.
The advisory forms part of the agency’s efforts to promote responsible online behaviour and raise awareness about cybercrime and the legal consequences of certain online activities.
NCCIA Helpline for Cybercrime Assistance
The NCCIA has also shared its helpline number, 1799, for people seeking assistance or wishing to report cybercrime.
Through its message, “Think Before You Share,” the agency encouraged citizens to use social media responsibly and help create a safer digital environment in Pakistan.
The advisory serves as a reminder that users should consider the accuracy and potential impact of information before sharing it online.
