The Jinnah International Airport in Karachi has been grappling with a rising trend of thefts and pickpocketing incidents in its lounges, waiting areas, and car parking lots, causing distress among travellers and visitors. According to sources, cases of stolen belongings have been on the rise, with thieves resorting to tactics like offering sweets and eatables to their unsuspecting targets. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with these thefts.
The escalating situation has prompted the attention of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and airport administration. In response, banners were put up at various spots within the airport premises, cautioning travellers and visitors to remain vigilant and safeguard their belongings. The banners carried a clear message, stating, “Beware of the pickpockets. Take care of your belongings yourself.”
However, the placement of these warning banners faced criticism on social media, particularly Twitter. Responding to the public’s reaction, the CAA confirmed that the banners had been displayed at three locations outside the international arrivals section. However, following the backlash, the banners were taken down.
Social media users expressed their concern and dismay over the presence of such banners, arguing that they presented a negative image of the Jinnah International Airport. The issue of thefts and pickpocketing remains a significant concern for passengers and visitors, demanding the attention and action of airport authorities.
In light of the increasing incidents, travellers and airport visitors are advised to exercise caution and remain alert to their surroundings. Additionally, airport authorities are urged to implement effective security measures to curb thefts and enhance the safety and peace of mind of passengers using the facility.
The rise in theft-related incidents at Karachi’s airport serves as a reminder for airports and transportation hubs to prioritize security measures and ensure the safety of their patrons and travellers.
