Wear mask or pay fine: Karachi administrator proposes

Administrator Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani said Karachi administration is considering slapping Rs1000 fine on citizens not wearing masks in public places.

Addressing a ceremony for inauguration of physiotherapy centers by Dr Essa Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre, Shallwani urged the people of Karachi to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) designed to contain the outbreak of COVID-19.

He noted that COVID-19 cases have hiked in the country, especially in Karachi, of late and thus in order to contain the infectious disease, he said, we have once again proposed a penalty of Rs1,000 fine for those who defy SOPs by not wearing a mask in public places.

He divulged that they first proposed penalizing the people not wearing their masks in the beginning days of pandemic outbreak, that is, in March or April. It was when the COVID-19 cases had just begun to turn up locally but the proposal was dropped.

He said that they have again circulated the same pitch to Sindh government to save people from the second wave of the infectious disease, especially given the recent jump im cases.

It may be pertinent to note that governments both provincial and federal fear the second wave of global pandemic with the advent of winters in the country.

Both the Center and Sindh government have strictly advised masses to undertake SOPs in public places and have discouraged public gatherings that may give rise to cases.
