During a meeting with a delegation of the All Pakistan Cable Operators Association (APCOA), Mayor Murtaza Wahab pledged full cooperation in addressing the issue of dangling and tangled cables in Karachi by facilitating their transition underground.
The delegation, led by APCOA Chairman Khalid Arain, requested the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to exempt them from road-cutting charges as they work towards laying cables underground. Arain emphasized the importance of cooperation between the cable operators and the KMC to resolve this issue.
Mayor Wahab expressed his commitment to resolving the challenges faced by the cable operators and assured them of his support. In response to the request for abolishing road-cutting charges, he proposed that the APCOA first undertake the task of laying cables underground on two specific roads as a pilot project. Once the effectiveness of this model is demonstrated, it can then be expanded to other roads in the city.
The mayor acknowledged the significance of addressing the issue of tangled cables and recognized the need for a coordinated effort between the cable operators and the KMC. He emphasized the importance of formulating legislation to regulate the process and facilitate the transition to underground cables.
The cooperation between the APCOA and the KMC in laying cables underground is expected to enhance the city’s infrastructure and contribute to a safer and more organized urban landscape. By working together, the cable operators and the authorities can overcome the challenges posed by dangling cables and create a more efficient and aesthetically pleasing environment for the residents of Karachi.
