SHC issues notices to NEPRA, K-Electric over consumer overbilling

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has taken notice of the issue of overbilling faced by consumers and has issued notices to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and K-Electric (KE) to respond to the matter. This development comes after a female citizen of Karachi approached the court, seeking relief from overbilling by the power-generating company.

The petitioner, Shamim Akhtar, pleaded to the court to cancel the license of K-Electric and highlighted the adverse impact it has had on the lives of Karachi residents. In her plea, Akhtar emphasized the urgent need for corrective measures to address the issue of overbilling and requested a refund of the excess charges.

Akhtar cited an alarming case where a small 60-yard house in Bihar Colony, Lyari, received a bill amounting to Rs 18,000, raising concerns about the accuracy and fairness of the billing system.

In response to the plea, the Sindh High Court has issued notices to NEPRA and K-Electric, summoning them to submit their responses for the upcoming hearing scheduled on August 7. The court aims to thoroughly examine the issue and ensure that consumer rights are protected in relation to billing practices.

The case highlights the significance of addressing the issue of overbilling and ensuring transparency and accountability in the electricity billing process. The court’s intervention provides hope for affected consumers and underscores the importance of fair and accurate billing practices in the power sector.
