Pakistan has been ranked 99th out of 121 countries in the latest Global Hunger Index (GHI) report, reflecting serious levels of hunger in the nation. The Global Hunger Index, jointly published by Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide, serves as an annual pre-reviewed report aimed at raising awareness and understanding of the global struggle against hunger.
With a score of 26.1, Pakistan’s level of hunger is categorized as serious, indicating a pressing issue that requires immediate attention. The 2022 GHI scores reveal the severity of hunger worldwide, with up to 828 million people facing hunger in 2021 due to the compounding effects of armed conflicts, climate change, and the coronavirus pandemic.
Regions such as Africa, South of the Sahara, and South Asia are among the hardest hit by hunger. In particular, South Asia, which includes Pakistan, has the highest hunger level globally. The region also has the highest child stunting rate and the highest child wasting rate compared to other parts of the world.
The Global Hunger Index provides crucial insights into the challenges faced by communities around the world in accessing sufficient and nutritious food. The report’s findings underscore the urgent need for coordinated efforts by governments, organizations, and communities to address the root causes of hunger and implement effective strategies to combat food insecurity.
As Pakistan strives to overcome its hunger challenges, a comprehensive approach that addresses underlying issues, including poverty, food distribution, and access to basic services, will be essential to improving the well-being and food security of its population.
