Nominal jail time for petty criminals at the root of uptick in street crime

At least 14,200 petty of Karachi’s criminals have been released back into society after serving nominal jail time in the ongoing year.

This came to light on Friday after questions were raised about the uptick in street crimes in the city in light of a Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) released a day before.

It was learnt that due to poor prosecution and an obsolete criminal justice system, a large number of criminals have been released on bail in the ongoing year.

According to statistics that have surfaced, an average street criminal only spends 40 days in jail.

Drug peddlers are released after a mere 30-day span. Car and motorcycle thieves also spend half that time, only 15 days, in the gallows. Smugglers of gutka and chalia also spend a nominal amount of time in jail.

With the justice system continually releasing repeat offenders from jail after a menial amount of time served, the rise in street crime is only to be expected.
