Karachi transport alliance threatens strike over fuel price hike by interim government

The Karachi Transport Alliance has issued a stern warning of going on strike in response to the recent fuel price hike imposed by the interim government. This announcement comes as a demand for the withdrawal of the government’s recent increase in petroleum product prices.

The Karachi Transport Alliance is demanding an immediate reversal of the recent surge in fuel prices. Frustrated by the government’s actions, the Alliance has threatened to initiate a strike by parking their vehicles if the price hike is not rolled back.

The interim government had recently increased petrol and diesel prices by a substantial margin, with petrol prices surging by up to Rs26 per litre. This price hike has had a cascading effect on various sectors, especially transportation, as it directly impacts the operational costs of vehicles.

Earlier in September, Pakistan Railways had also raised train fares for the second time in the same month due to the significant rise in petrol and diesel prices. Train fares saw a 5% increase across all types of trains, including shuttles, passenger, express, and freight services. Notably, the fares for shuttle and passenger trains covering distances up to 250 kilometers remained unaffected.

These repeated increases in transportation and fuel costs have raised concerns among various sectors and may have broader implications for inflation and economic stability if left unaddressed.
