Karachi is expected to experience another spell of light rain this week, continuing the streak of sporadic showers and drizzling that have graced the city over the past several days, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) announced on Monday.
The PMD reported that temperatures dropped to a pleasant 26.5°C, with a potential rise to a maximum of 30-32°C later in the day. The humidity levels remain high, with the department recording a 92% humidity ratio in the air, contributing to the cool and slightly muggy atmosphere. Winds from the west are expected to blow at speeds ranging from 14 to 24 kilometers per hour, adding to the city’s breezy and pleasant conditions.
Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz assured that the city’s pleasant weather would likely persist throughout the week. “Intermittent drizzling and light rain are expected to continue, ensuring a comfortable climate for Karachi’s residents,” he said.
In addition to the ongoing light rains, Sardar Sarfaraz provided a forecast for a more substantial monsoon spell expected to begin on August 18. Under this upcoming monsoon system, various parts of Sindh, including Karachi, may experience heavier downpours.
"The monsoon system is expected to bring significant rain to Sindh, beginning from mid-August. While Karachi will likely see its share of rain, other regions in the province may also experience substantial rainfall during this period,” Sarfaraz noted.
Over the weekend, Karachi’s major areas, including Mauripur Road, Lyari, Gulistan-e-Johar, Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulshan-e-Jamal, Rashid Minhas Road, Sharea Faisal, and Korangi, experienced light showers. These sporadic rains have brought a noticeable drop in temperatures, turning the city’s weather from typically hot and humid to refreshingly cool.
Residents across the city have welcomed this shift in weather, with many enjoying the cooler conditions. The light rains have provided a much-needed respite from the usual scorching summer heat, bringing life to the streets and offering Karachiites an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.
The PMD had earlier indicated that strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal were expected to penetrate various parts of the country, particularly in Sindh, until August 12. These currents have already influenced the weather patterns in Karachi, resulting in the light rains observed over the past week.
As the monsoon season progresses, Karachi is likely to see more such spells, which could bring about significant changes in the city’s usual weather patterns. The PMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as the new monsoon system approaches.
For the coming week, Karachi residents can anticipate more light showers and drizzling, with pleasant and breezy weather prevailing. The PMD advises residents to stay updated on weather forecasts, especially as the monsoon system expected from August 18 approaches, which could bring heavier rain to the city.
The continuation of light rain and drizzling is expected to keep the city’s atmosphere cool and comfortable, offering a reprieve from the summer heat. Residents are encouraged to enjoy the pleasant weather but remain prepared for the potential heavier rains later in the month.
This monsoon season, while bringing relief from the heat, also serves as a reminder of Karachi’s vulnerability to heavy rains. The city’s infrastructure and drainage systems are often put to the test during such periods, and authorities are urged to ensure preparedness to handle any adverse conditions that may arise.
