Karachi Cultural Department cracks down on illegal Banyan tree cutting

n a proactive move, the Cultural Department of Karachi has taken stern action against a mafia involved in the unauthorized felling of ancient banyan trees, which hold historical significance in the city. The department, in a formal letter, addressed concerns about unidentified individuals engaged in the illicit removal of these revered trees, particularly from the vicinity of Jess and Mary School and other areas in Clifton, even during broad daylight.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab has swiftly responded to the alarming situation, urging the Inspector General (IG) of Police to initiate prompt legal action against those responsible for this environmental transgression. The need for immediate intervention to curb further damage to the city’s green cover has been emphasized, and cases are expected to be filed against the culprits.

Expressing his concern, Mayor Wahab highlighted the gravity of the situation and stressed the role of the police in preventing such actions. In a tweet, he stated, “The police are responsible for this action. The KMC has intervened to put a stop to it. I have forwarded the video to the Inspector General (IG) for necessary actions against those responsible. Ali Manzoor, who initially brought this matter to my attention, has also been informed.”

The illegal cutting down of banyan trees poses a threat not only to the city’s natural heritage but also to its ecological balance. Banyan trees, known for their grandeur and historical value, have long been integral to Karachi’s landscape, providing shade, improving air quality, and contributing to the city’s unique cultural identity.

Residents and environmentalists have expressed their concern over the brazen act of chopping down these ancient trees, calling for strict measures to be taken against the perpetrators. The involvement of a mafia in such activities raises questions about the protection of Karachi’s green spaces and the urgent need for enhanced security and monitoring to safeguard the city’s natural assets.

The Cultural Department’s decisive action against the illegal tree cutting reflects a commitment to preserving Karachi’s environmental heritage. As the case unfolds, citizens hope for a thorough investigation and the imposition of stringent penalties to deter any future attempts at jeopardizing the city’s greenery.

This incident serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect and nurture Karachi’s natural resources, prompting authorities, environmental organizations, and the public to collaborate in ensuring the sustainable future of the city’s green environment.
