The ICC Champions Trophy is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the cricket world, with thrilling matches and competition between top-tier cricket teams globally.
The current format of the ICC Champions Trophy includes a qualification phase that takes place during the preceding Cricket World Cup, where the top eight ranked teams (including the host nation) secure their spots in the tournament phase.
A total of thirteen teams have competed across the eight editions of the Champions Trophy, with eight teams participating in the 2017 tournament.
Australia and India are the most successful teams, each winning the tournament twice, while South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Pakistan have each won it once.
Seven national teams have participated in every edition of the tournament so far.
Pakistan is the reigning champion, having won the 2017 edition in England and Wales and now hosting the tournament.
It is worth noting here that the tournament was earlier slated to be held entirely in Pakistan, however, the arch-rival India decided not to send its players to the host country citing security concerns despite the PCB’s surety of foolproof security for the sports persons.
However, after several of month’s deadlock, Pakistan and India along with the other stakeholders held a meeting in ICC headquarters, Dubai, and reached a consensus that the Champions Trophy matches of the Indian cricket team would be played at a neutral venue, which was later decided as UAE.
The host country Pakistan has already initiated the preparation ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025 – with hotel bookings for participating teams and ICC officials already begun – for the upcoming tournament scheduled to be held in Pakistan across three venues — Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi and Dubai in UAE from February 19 to March 9, 2025.
As we gear up for the 2025 edition, here’s a comprehensive overview of key stats, teams, and records in the history of Champions Trophy.
