Caretaker minister acknowledges K Electric’s deteriorated plants, calls for unified business voice

During a recent event in Karachi, Caretaker Minister for Industries and Revenue, Younis Dagha, shed light on the challenges faced by the city’s energy sector, particularly the deteriorated state of K Electric plants. The minister stressed the importance of a united front from the business community in Karachi to effectively address these concerns.

Dagha explained the intricacies of electricity pricing, highlighting both a fixed annual component and monthly fuel adjustment charges. He pointed out the need for a unified voice among Karachi’s business class, underscoring the contrast with cities like Lahore and Faisalabad where a collective stance carries more weight.

As energy falls under federal jurisdiction, Dagha announced plans to meet with the caretaker chief minister and industrial representatives to discuss structural and energy issues. The goal is to formulate concrete recommendations for the federation through collaboration with stakeholders.

The minister advocated for transparent subsidy mechanisms, suggesting that if the government aims to subsidize domestic consumers, it should allocate funds from the budget. He expressed concerns about the inadequate presentation of energy-related issues to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Dagha also highlighted ongoing digitization efforts in Sindh, revealing plans for the Sindh Revenue Department to launch a revenue app on an experimental basis in the coming week. He emphasized the significance of digitization and urged banks to recognize revenue land papers.

In addition, Dagha announced the establishment of a works committee for the development of industrial areas, comprising representatives from associations. The committee aims to facilitate collective support for development activities in these areas.
