Imran Khan ‘quit’ talks with govt over delay in forming judicial commission

Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has ended negotiations with government officials due to its failure to establish a judicial commission within the agreed seven-day deadline, as reported by local media here on Thursday.

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, a PTI leader, confirmed the decision outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where Khan has been imprisoned for over a year.

Khan expressed frustration, stating that the government’s failure to act on the formation of the commission left no reason to continue talks.

PTI had presented its demands in December, including the creation of two judicial commissions to investigate key political events, such as the May 9, 2023 riots and the November 2024 Islamabad protests. These commissions were to be formed within seven days, with nominations from both the PTI and the government.

Despite several rounds of talks, the negotiations made little progress, and the government had not followed through on its commitments. PTI also called for an inquiry into the legality of Khan’s arrest and the treatment of political prisoners.

Opposition leaders, Omar Ayub, also criticized the delay, calling negotiations meaningless without the formation of the commissions.

The government, however, expressed disappointment with PTI’s stance, urging a more flexible approach to the talks.

Khan’s party vowed to continue its constitutional struggle and collaborate with other political forces in pursuit of their demands.
