A four-member gang, including a woman, is reportedly active in Karachi, using deceptive tactics to steal ATM cards and passwords from citizens.
The CCTV footage of one of the incidents has emerged showing the gang members deceiving an elderly citizen in the Nazimabad area of Karachi.
The accused later allegedly withdrew Rs 450,000 from the account of a senior citizen.
The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has arrested one individual and launched a manhunt for the others involved in the incident.
SSP SIU, Shoaib Memon, the gang’s method of robbery disclosed that the suspects are IT experts who hack ATM machines and monitor them from outside the bank. When a victim uses the machine, the card becomes stuck, making them vulnerable to fraud.
“An accomplice then enters the bank under the guise of offering assistance, obtaining the victim’s password and other personal details by impersonating a bank representative and calling the helpline,” SSP said.
Memon confirmed that a woman is part of the gang, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Authorities have indicated that the gang has carried out similar crimes in multiple cities, including Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi.
