Karachi Mayor approves Rs4.8bln development fund for UCs

The Mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, approved Rs 4.8 billion in the development schemes for the Union Councils (UCs) across the metropolis, with each UC set to receive Rs 20 million.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced the approval of development schemes worth Rs4.8 billion for the city’s Union Councils (UCs), with each council set to receive Rs20 million.

In a bid to improve the local infrastructure of Karachi, the Sindh government has raised the funds allocated for each UC from Rs 500,000 to Rs 1.2 million.

During a press briefing, Wahab credited the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for driving the city’s progress. "If a single brick is laid in this city, it is by the PPP,” he asserted, encouraging citizens to support ongoing projects.

He also unveiled 240 new development schemes aimed at enhancing local infrastructure, emphasizing collaboration to overcome external challenges.

Wahab highlighted the PPP’s growing public support, citing Rs500 million raised by the PPP Council in two months and the party’s recent by-election victories securing three UC chairmanships.

He also expressed satisfaction with the recently held cultural milestones such as the IDEAS 2024 Conference, which drew military chiefs from 40 nations, and the World Culture Festival organized by the Arts Council, featuring artists from 44 countries.

The mayor praised the Sindh government for its Rs450 million grant to the Arts Council, which has bolstered cultural events like the International Urdu Conference and Karachi Festival.

Wahab also noted significant improvement, including the establishment of Metropolitan University and CyberKnife treatment at Jinnah Hospital, benefiting patients from 167 cities.

These developments, Wahab stated, reflect Karachi’s progress and growing prominence on cultural and international fronts.
