SFA forms scientific panel to oversee standards in oil & ghee sector

The Sindh Food Authority (SFA) has decided to form a 20-member scientific panel to set quality and safety standards for Pakistan’s oil and ghee sector.

This initiative includes representatives from the food authorities of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Balochistan, as well as food science experts from universities and members of the Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association.

According to SFA Director General Muzzammil Hussain Halepoto, the panel’s responsibilities will focus on developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and offering expert guidance for the oil and ghee industry, using insights from cutting-edge scientific research.

The panel has been constituted under Section 11(f) of the Sindh Food Authority Act, 2016, with a mandate to improve the quality and safety of food products for consumers.

The expert group will address technical aspects of production and collaborate with industry and consumer representatives to form well-rounded, research-backed recommendations.

If the Authority disagrees with any recommendation, the panel may reconsider and resubmit its findings for mandatory implementation.

This step is anticipated to enhance consumer safety and foster significant improvements in Pakistan’s food sector.
