The Sindh Assembly has passed a resolution against the construction of six controversial canals on the Indus River, declaring them illegal and a violation of the 1991 Water Treaty.
The resolution, presented by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, urges the federal government to ensure fair water distribution under the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) pact.
Addressing the assembly, Murad Ali Shah condemned the canal projects as an attempt to rob Sindh of its water rights.
He warned that the construction of these canals, including the Cholistan Canal, could trigger an environmental crisis, causing severe water shortages that would impact agriculture, the economy, and daily life.
“There will be no compromise on Sindh’s right to Indus River water. The construction of Cholistan Canal and other canals is unacceptable under any circumstances,” he asserted.
The Sindh government has vowed to defend the people’s water rights at all levels and has called for urgent discussions on equitable water distribution among provinces.
Murad Ali Shah warned that any unfair control over water resources will face public resistance, emphasizing that Sindh will not accept any illegal water allocation.
