Karachi faces sharp rise in fruit prices as Ramadan begins

Karachi fruit prices

Instead of providing relief to citizens, the Karachi Commissioner has raised official fruit prices amid rampant price violations by vendors during Ramadan 2025.

Since the start of the holy month, fruit sellers have been ignoring government-set rates and charging arbitrary prices. While citizens struggle with skyrocketing costs, fruit vendors claim that middlemen are responsible for the surge.

In a controversial move, city authorities have increased official fruit prices to reduce the gap between government rates and market prices instead of enforcing regulations.

The revised prices include guava at Rs 175 (previously Rs 150), melon at Rs 114 (previously Rs 97), banana at Rs 208 (previously Rs 140), chiko at Rs 278 (previously Rs 208), golden apple at Rs 261 (previously Rs 219), and dates at Rs 667 (previously Rs 633).

Despite the hike, fruit sellers continue to charge exorbitant rates, with melon being sold at Rs 150, watermelon at Rs 200, banana at Rs 200-250, apple at Rs 400, chiko at Rs 300, and guava at Rs 250 per kg.

This increase in official prices has further burdened consumers who are already struggling with high inflation.

Citizens have expressed their frustration, demanding that the government take immediate action to control market prices instead of increasing them further.

They urge authorities to enforce price regulations effectively so that fresh and quality fruits remain accessible at affordable rates during Ramadan.
