Karachi airport’s second runway to be upgraded soon

Karachi airport upgrade

Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced plans to complete the construction and upgrading of Karachi airport’s second runway on modern lines soon.

This project, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and safety, is a significant step for Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport.

Additionally, expansion projects are underway at Sukkur, Skardu, and Dera Ghazi Khan airports to accommodate large aircraft, with Sukkur and Skardu airports expected to be the first to handle them.

A new greenfield airport for Dera Ismail Khan is also in the planning stages, further improving the country’s aviation infrastructure.

These developments were discussed during the second e-court, chaired by Acting Director General (PAA) Air Vice Marshal Zeeshan Saeed, with Deputy DG Airports Sadiqur Rehman and other key officials in attendance.

The meeting focused on passenger issues and operational challenges, with PAA reaffirming its commitment to improving airport services and infrastructure.

Earlier in the day, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Officers Association has raised alarms over the deteriorating cleanliness and maintenance at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, calling it a breach of international standards.

In a letter addressed to the Director General of Pakistan Airports Authority and the Director General of Civil Aviation, the association pointed out several issues, including over 100 neglected trees that have withered due to mismanagement, piles of garbage in parking areas, and stains from chewing tobacco on the premises.

Despite millions being spent on maintenance contractors, the airport continues to fall short of cleanliness standards, tarnishing the image of the Airports Authority with passengers have frequently complained about the poor state of facilities, such as unclean restrooms.

The letter also highlighted an escalating stray dog problem at the airport, with dogs now roaming near main entrances, exits, and parking areas, creating safety concerns.
