The Commissioner of Karachi Division, Syed Hassan Naqvi, has imposed a ban on littering, dumping garbage, and disposing of debris into the city’s nullahs and open spaces.
The decision comes in light of environmental hazards and the blockage of drainage channels, particularly during the monsoon season.
The ban, effective from January 23, 2025, to March 23, 2025, was enforced under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, as stated in a notification issued by the Karachi Commissioner’s Office.
The Karachi Commissioner’s ban specifically targets waste pickers, scavengers, recyclers, and any individuals involved in dumping waste into nullahs.
The Managing Director of the Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) had previously highlighted the issue in a letter, warning that improper disposal of waste contributes to choking nullahs, reducing their water discharge capacity, and creating serious environmental risks.
The notification empowers Station House Officers (SHOs) of local police stations to register complaints under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) against individuals violating the ban.
The SHOs are instructed to act upon any reports of illegal waste disposal to ensure compliance.
