The number of divorce (khula) cases filed in Karachi has doubled over the past four years.
According to media reports, a total of 5,845 divorce cases were filed in the city’s family courts back in 2020, however by 2024, that number has surpassed 11,000.
Statistics reveal that more than 30 divorce cases are being filed daily in Karachi, compared to just 16 cases per day four years ago.
Women lawyers attribute this surge to various factors contributing to the rise in divorce cases.
As per media reports, the highest number of divorce cases in 2024 were filed in Karachi’s East District, with 3,288 cases, in the Central District, 2,271 women sought divorce, while 1,523 cases were filed in Malir District, and the Western District saw 2,255 Khula cases, and in the Southern District, 1,625 women filed for Khula.
